The 20 yard container in Clifton, NJ
The 20 yard is the size we deliver most often out of our Clifton Blvd yard, and for good reason — it covers the middle ground where a lot of real Clifton-area projects land. A full roof tear-off on one of the older homes tucked near the Route 3 or 46 corridors, a kitchen-and-bathroom remodel happening together, or a whole-house cleanout ahead of a move all tend to fit in one 20 yard without needing a second pull.
At 22 feet long, it's the same length as our 30 yard but shorter in wall height, which means it needs the same driveway clearance while staying easier to load by hand for jobs that don't involve heavy equipment.
When a 20 yard is the right size
This is the size to book when a project touches more than one part of the house, or when you're clearing an entire property rather than a single room. Roofing crews reach for this size on standard-size Clifton homes, including plenty of the older tear-off jobs near the busy Route 3/46 corridors, and it's also the go-to for whole-house cleanouts where furniture, boxes, and years of belongings need to leave in one coordinated effort.
Placement on a Clifton driveway
Plan for about 34 feet of clear, level driveway and roughly 23-25 feet of overhead clearance for the hoist. Longer driveways out toward the Allwood and Styertowne shopping areas typically handle this without issue; if your home is on an older, shorter lot closer to Athenia or Richfield, it's worth measuring first or asking us to take a look at photos before delivery.
The common mistake with this size
Because the 20 yard looks large, people sometimes assume it can absorb unlimited weight along with the volume. It can't — 3-4 tons is generous for mixed renovation debris, but a driveway full of wet roofing tear-off or concrete can hit that limit before the bin is visually full. If your project is weight-heavy, mention the material type when you book so we can flag it in advance.
Capacity
What actually fits in a 20 yard container
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what stops most loads.
| Material | How much fits |
|---|---|
| Roofing shingles | a full tear-off on an average 2,000-2,500 sq ft Clifton-area roof |
| Kitchen and bath remodel debris | cabinets, drywall, tile, and fixtures combined |
| Whole-house cleanout | furniture, boxes, and belongings from a 3-4 bedroom home |
| Concrete or asphalt | roughly 8-10 cubic yards before hitting the weight limit |
| Construction debris | framing lumber, drywall scraps, and packaging from a mid-size addition |

Placing a 20 yard container on a Clifton-area property
The 20 yard's 22-foot length is the same footprint we'd need for a 30 yard, so if your driveway near Allwood or out toward the Nutley line can already fit it, you've got room to step up in capacity later without a placement problem — useful to know if a renovation grows mid-project. If any part of the container needs to sit on the street, Clifton's Chapter 209 ordinance caps it at a third of the street's width and 5 feet clear of a neighboring driveway; we'll walk that with you before delivery.

Answers
20 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
Is the 20 yard the right size for a roof replacement?
For most single-family homes in the Clifton area, yes. A standard 2,000-2,500 square foot roof tear-off typically fits within the volume and weight limits, though steep-slope or multi-layer roofs may need a larger size — ask us when you book.
How much weight can I put in a 20 yard dumpster?
The included allowance is 3-4 tons. Mixed renovation debris rarely hits that limit by weight before the bin fills visually, but dense material like wet shingles, concrete, or tile can add up fast.
Will a 20 yard dumpster fit on my Clifton driveway?
Most standard residential driveways handle it, needing about 34 feet of clear, level space. Homes on older, shorter lots near Athenia or Richfield should measure first or send us a photo.
What's the difference between a 20 and a 30 yard dumpster?
They share the same 22-foot length and driveway footprint, but the 30 yard has taller walls for significantly more volume. If your driveway fits one, it fits the other — the choice comes down to how much debris you expect.
