Weights, sizes and capacities

Container dimensions differ between manufacturers, and the weight of a given material varies considerably with moisture, age and composition. Every figure published here is an approximate working number intended to help you choose a size, not a specification. The dimensions and allowance that apply to your rental are the ones confirmed on your quote.

Regulations and permits

New Jersey has a genuinely three-tier permitting structure: strong home-rule municipal government, a distinct county road/engineering layer for county-maintained routes, and NJDOT for state highways. For an ordinary dumpster rental it is almost always Clifton's own municipal rules that apply. Clifton's Chapter 209 ordinance ("Dumpsters and Refuse Containers") requires any company placing a dumpster on a public street to keep it at least 5 feet from a neighboring driveway, to take up no more than a third of the street width, to place it no more than 24 hours before work starts and remove it no more than 24 hours after work finishes, and to keep it covered and marked with reflectorized surfaces for night visibility. Anything beyond a simple driveway placement generally needs a City of Clifton Right-of-Way Permit ($75 application fee), reviewed by the City Engineer with sign-off from Public Works and the Police Traffic Division. A container kept entirely on private property — a driveway or a lot — generally does not require this permit, but street or right-of-way placement does. Separately, New Jersey requires commercial solid waste haulers to hold NJDEP A-901 licensing and vehicle waste decals; that is a state-level requirement on the hauler, not a permit a customer needs to obtain. The eleven surrounding towns we cover — Passaic and Paterson (cities); Little Falls, Lyndhurst, Bloomfield, Montclair and Nutley (townships); Woodland Park, Elmwood Park and Rutherford (boroughs) — are each a full, independent New Jersey municipality with its own local government, not a branch office of Clifton or of any county. We have not catalogued a specific permit fee or process for each of the eleven; for a job that needs street placement outside Clifton, confirm directly with that town's own clerk or public works office before you book, rather than assume Clifton's Chapter 209 process carries over. A placement that touches a county-maintained road rather than a city street falls instead under Passaic County's own road permitting.

New Jersey waste disposal and recycling rules

New Jersey requires source-separated recycling of a range of designated materials statewide, and specific categories — construction debris such as concrete, asphalt and clean fill; scrap metal; cardboard and paper; and yard waste among them — are generally expected to be recycled or handled separately rather than sent to a landfill mixed with general trash. The exact category a given material falls into, and where it needs to go, can vary by hauler and by facility. Several materials need their own separate container or drop-off rather than going into a general debris load — ask us before you book if you are not sure which category your material falls into.

Hazardous materials

Handling of hazardous waste, and abatement of materials such as asbestos, is regulated under New Jersey environmental and occupational safety law and NJDEP regulations, and above defined thresholds must be carried out by licensed contractors with proper testing, notification and disposal — a rule that matters given how much of Clifton's and North Jersey's older housing stock predates modern building materials. Nothing on this site should be read as suggesting that such material may be placed in a container or handled without the required testing, licensing and notification.
